The slowest part of carbon reporting is usually collecting the data, and the weakest part is that the collected number gets separated from the document it came from.

Invoices and delivery notes are read into structured activity data with the source document retained. Sensors sign their own readings with device certificates, and a reading whose signature does not verify never becomes an emission record. Spreadsheets import for the data that genuinely lives in spreadsheets.

Three routes, three levels of reliability — and every record says which one it took

The same figure can enter by three routes, and the three are not equally solid. We write that onto the record: its PROVENANCE GRADE. Gold is a signed instrument reading — nothing is typed between the reading and the record. Silver is a source document — the figure was read off an invoice and the document's bytes are stored under their own hash, so an auditor returns to exactly that document. Bronze is a declaration — someone entered it; it may well be right, but its basis is a statement rather than a source record.

If a calculation rests on both a signed reading and a hand-entered value, its grade is NOT gold — it is as good as its weakest link. Seeing bronze is not a bad thing, it is an honest one; what is bad is presenting every line as equally certain.
