How do you get Scope 3 out of suppliers?

By asking them for measured data instead of guessing from spend — and giving them a way to answer.

Replace spend estimates with measured data

For most manufacturers Scope 3 is the majority of the footprint, and most of it is estimated from money spent. Those estimates carry error bands wide enough to make the resulting number hard to act on and harder to defend.

Suppliers submit primary data through their own portal — no account on your side, no software for them to buy. Where measured data arrives it replaces the estimate, and the receipt records which was used.

Improvement becomes visible

Per-supplier emission intensity is tracked over time, so a supplier that reduces its footprint can show it and you can see it. That turns a compliance exercise into a procurement signal.

Records constrain each other

There is a limit to what verifying a single declaration achieves: a figure that looks plausible enough passes. A network gives you something different — records constrain each other. If a supplier's declared output and the total purchases of the buyers linked to it do not add up, that is a measurable contradiction, and it gets flagged.

The same works at document level: the deviation between a value read off an invoice and the emissions calculated from that invoice is measured. Where there is a deviation the submission is not rejected — the record's grade is lowered, and the reason is written both to the buyer and to the chain. We do not pass judgement; we measure.

The more the network grows, the more checks surround each record. Accuracy comes from records that overlap, not from one person paying attention.

FAQ

Our customer asked for an LCA. Is a carbon footprint enough?

Often they mean a product carbon footprint and use "LCA" loosely. Sometimes they mean a genuine multi-impact assessment, and occasionally they mean a verified EPD, which is a different exercise again.

It is worth asking which of those they need before producing any of them. The comparison page sets the four side by side for exactly this conversation.

Can you produce a full multi-impact LCA today?

Not today. The multi-impact engine is built, and carbon runs on it in production. What it lacks is a licensed inventory database covering water, acidification, eutrophication and resource use to the standard a real assessment needs.

We would rather say that plainly than produce a multi-impact number we cannot source.

Where do your emission factors come from?

From published datasets, and every factor carries its source and year into the result. The free calculator on this site uses a 43-factor catalogue derived from the audited catalogue in the platform, with the version stamped on the output.

Some entries are weaker than others — an ageing polyester factor, some without a redistributable licence — and those are flagged rather than quietly averaged in.
