CSRD
The EU directive requiring in-scope companies to report sustainability information, audited, alongside their financial statements.
CSRD moves sustainability reporting from a voluntary annexe into the audited part of the annual report. What must be reported is set by the ESRS standards.
Two features change behaviour more than the reporting itself. First, the information is subject to assurance — someone external has to be able to follow the number. Second, it is double materiality: a company reports both how sustainability matters affect it, and how it affects the world.
Its scope and timing have been amended since adoption, including through the simplification package. Whether and when it applies to a given company is a question worth checking against the current consolidated text rather than a summary written earlier.
