The EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation — the framework that makes digital product passports a legal requirement.

ESPR replaces the older Ecodesign Directive and widens it well beyond energy-using products. It gives the Commission the power to set requirements — durability, repairability, recycled content, information disclosure — product group by product group, through delegated acts.

The Digital Product Passport is one of those requirements. This means “when does DPP apply to me” has no single answer: it depends on when the delegated act for your product group arrives.

For most companies the practical consequence is not the deadline but the data. Requirements assume you can state, per product, what it is made of and where that came from.
